Henri Le Sidaner (1862–1939) was a French painter active in the early 20th century, known for his unique touch in depicting subjects such as moonlit nights, garden tables, roses, and twilight scenes.
Biography
Le Sidaner was born in Port Louis on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean in 1862. In 1870, his family moved to Dunkirk. Later, he went to Paris to study at the studio of Alexandre Cabanel. In 1882, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts. After serving in the military for about a year, he returned to Cabanel's studio but eventually left due to differing artistic directions. Influenced by Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Realism, and Symbolism, he developed his unique style. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1894 and later at the 1900 Paris Exposition.
Throughout his life, Le Sidaner traveled and lived in various cities in France, as well as in London, New York, and Venice. He particularly loved the small village of Gerberoy in northern France, moving there in 1901. At the time, Gerberoy was neglected due to past religious wars. Le Sidaner transformed his garden into a rose garden and proposed that the entire village be adorned with roses. The villagers embraced his idea, and Gerberoy, now blooming with roses in season, has been recognized as one of "The Most Beautiful Villages in France."
Le Sidaner later moved to Versailles, where he passed away in 1939, just weeks before the outbreak of World War II.
In 1989, a major retrospective of his work was held at the Musée Marmottan in Paris. In recent years, exhibitions of his work have been frequently held across Europe.
